چکیده

The toxicities of three synthetic surfactants to the marine macroalga, Ulva lactuca, have been examined by monitoring chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching. The anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), exerted no measurable toxicity over the concentration range 0–10 mg L, while presence of the non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-100 (TX), elicited a small reduction in photochemical efficiency that was independent of concentration. The cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA), incurred a dose-dependent response to ∼3 mg L (EC50=2.4 mg L), but a reduction in toxicity thereafter. Presence of TX had little effect on the toxicity of HDTMA but an equimolar concentration of SDS directly offset the impact of HDTMA on photochemical efficiency. Relative toxicities of the surfactants are attributed to differences in affinity for the algal surface and tendencies to disrupt cell membranes and interact with intracellular macromolecules. Non-linear dose responses and antagonistic effects are attributed to non-specific interactions between molecules of the same surfactant and electrostatic interactions between molecules of different amphiphilic character.

δ(15)N variation in Ulva lactuca as a proxy for anthropogenic nitrogen inputs in coastal areas of Gulf of Gaeta (Mediterranean Sea).

We tested the capacity of Ulva lactuca to mark N sources across large marine areas by measuring variation in its δ(15)N at several sites in the Gulf of Gaeta. Comparisons were made with the macroalga Cystoseira amentacea. Variation of δ(15)N values was assessed also in the coastal waters off the Circeo Natural Park, where U. lactuca and C. amentacea were harvested, as these waters are barely in...

An evaluation of the toxicity and bioaccumulation of bismuth in the coastal environment using three species of macroalga.

Bismuth is a heavy metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly defined. In this study, we exposed three different species of macroalga (the chlorophyte, Ulva lactuca, the phaeophyte, Fucus vesiculosus, and the rhodophyte, Chondrus crispus) to different concentrations of Bi (up to 50 μg L(-1)) under controlled, laboratory conditions. After a period of 48-h, the phyto...

Bioactivity potential of some marine algae from south of Iran

Algae are composed of a diverse group of various aquatic organisms. Secondary or primary metabolites from these organisms may be potential bioactive compounds of interest for use in the development of new pharmaceutical agents. In this research, four species of marine algae, Ulva lactuca, Padina pavonica, Colpomenia sinuosa and Cystoseira myrica, isolated from Persian Gulf coasts were evaluated...

Differential Effects of Dimethylsulfoniopropionate, Dimethylsulfonioacetate, and Other S-Methylated Compounds on the Growth of Sinorhizobium meliloti at Low and High Osmolarities.

An extract from the marine alga Ulva lactuca was highly osmoprotective in salt-stressed cultures of Sinorhizobium meliloti 102F34. This beneficial activity was due to algal 3-dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), which was accumulated as a dominant compatible solute and strongly reduced the accumulation of endogenous osmolytes in stressed cells. Synthetic DMSP also acted as a powerful osmoprotecta...
